Information
Solent Works is a contemporary woodcraft studio working with sustainably sourced British hardwoods in Hampshire, England. The studios practice is centered on woodturning to produce vessels as representations of the natural world.
Process
Working with hardwoods native to Britain, vessels are made individually through the craft of woodturning, the action of shaping wood with a lathe. The raw material is sourced locally from storm-damaged trees and processed in-house before being left to season and stabilise before use. The selected timber is then turned by hand in stages to create tactile, thin-walled vessels inspired by function and utility.
Vessels are finished with urushi, a natural lacquer derived from tree sap to provide strength and waterproofing. Surfaces are developed by applying multiple layers of urushi combined with clay powders and pigments, requiring specific humidities and temperatures to cure. This process produces textural surfaces informed by the surrounding landscape to evoke natural realism.
Utilising a slow-made ideology of working from fallen tree to completed vessel enables the studio to oversee the entire making process through a sustainable and regenerative practice.
Care Instructions
All items are natural products and therefore there may be a small amount of movement as the vessel adapts to its new environment. Avoid placement in direct sunlight and near heat sources to maintain form.
To clean, use natural soap, water and a non-abrasive sponge, do not immerse or soak in water for long periods. Not suitable for dishwasher or microwave. After hand washing, remove excess water and allow to dry.
